Tim Buckley estreou em gravações em 1966, após ser visto pelo empresário de Frank Zappa durante uma apresentação em Los Angeles. O álbum, que levava seu nome refletia claramente uma influência do folk, em especial de Bob Dylan; sua voz chamava a atenção pelos agudos, que o aproximavam de um cantor de coral.
"Goodbye and Hello", do ano seguinte, é talvez seu trabalho mais conhecido, no qual o acompanhamento de banda é substituído por intrincados arranjos de cordas e metais, e as letras tornam-se mais ambiciosas.
Em seu terceiro álbum, o mais conceituado pela crítica, Tim flerta com o cool jazz de Miles Davis e abaixa seu tom de voz; esta aproximação com o jazz pontuaria também seus álbuns seguintes.
Um dos traços típicos dele era pular de estilo de LP para LP, o que intrigava seus fãs e enlouquecia qualquer gravadora. Assim, se no começo da carreira ("Wings", música de 1966) Buckley empostava a voz como um menestrel medieval, inclusive caprichando no sotaque inglês para soar mais convincente.
No final ("Make It Right" de 1972) ele mandava ver em funks lúbricos, gemendo sacanagens S&M. Não era para ser o mesmo cantor mas era.
Sua
obra - símbolo "Song to the siren" (Canto para a sereia), é um bom
exemplo. É a tal melodia composta por Buckley à mesa do café, diante dos
olhos de Beckett, em 1967. O letrista fora à casa do cantor apresentar
um poema inspirado na "Odisséia", de Homero. O outro leu a letra, fez
uma pausa, pegou o violão de 12 cordas e criou a música no ato, quase
do modo como ela seria registrada no LP "Starsailor", de 1970. A
primeira versão lançada em disco foi na voz de... Pat Boone. Um ano
antes. O episódio está descrito no encarte do álbum. "Havia três ou
quatro de nós em torno da mesa, completamente surpresos que algo tão
lindo pudesse estar nascendo conosco ali", declarou Beckett a Barry
