Começou sua carreira influenciado pelos Beatles mas, ao assistir um espetáculo de Albert Collins, resolveu seguir o caminho do blues. Ao lado de Albert Collins e Johnny Copeland registrou o já clássico álbum Showdown!. Suas músicas foram regravadas por artistas como Eric Clapton (Bad Influence) e Albert Collins (Phone Booth).
Aos 65 anos, Robert Cray é velho conhecido dos brasileiros. Lembra-se de que a primeira turnê no país foi 31 anos atrás porque guarda, até hoje, um suvenir (uma placa de carro) onde está grafado “Rio de Janeiro, 1988”. Referência do blues, Cray tocou com vários dos maiores – B. B. King, Eric Clapton, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan e Chuck Berry. Mas o pulo do gato em sua carreira, que lhe garantiu bastante popularidade, foi atualizar o blues – por vezes, trazendo influências do R&B, soul e rock. Seu álbum mais conhecido é Strong persuader (1986), que incluiu os sucessos Right next door (Because of me) e Smoking gun.
Em 40 anos de carreira, Cray lançou 20 álbuns de estúdio e recebeu cinco prêmios Grammy. No show, o guitarrista vai tocar ao lado de Richard Cousins (baixo), Dover Weinberg (teclados) e Terrence Clark (bateria). O repertório mescla velhas e novas canções.
O álbum Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm (2017), foi gravado em Memphis, Tennessee, com a Hi Rhythm Section, lendária formação de estúdio que gravou com Al Green, Otis Clay e Ann Peebles. Ideia do produtor e músico Steve Jordan, que há muitos anos colabora com ele (e produziu Herbie Hancock e John Mayer, entre outros), o disco teve a participação do cantor, compositor e guitarrista Tony Joe White, morto em 2018.
