Essa banda surgiu em 1958 e atingiu grande sucesso nos States, consagrando faixas que mais tarde foram regravadas por muitos artistas como “Louie Louie” e “Louie, Go Home”. Diferentemente de outros grupos da época, Paul Revere & The Raiders tinham uma forte preocupação cênica com sua obra. No palco, eles se apresentavam vestidos como soldados da Revolução Americana, conflito que garantiu a independência dos Estados Unidos da Inglaterra. Isso tudo fazia parte de um discurso bastante irônico: Paul Revere é também o nome de um herói da independência dos EUA e a banda queria se posicionar como uma resposta patriótica à enxurrada de bandas inglesas que assolava o país na época e que ficou conhecida como a Invasão Britânica.
Musicalmente, Paul Revere & The Raiders não foi um grupo que chegou a desenvolver algo muito único, mas algumas faixas suas se destacam bastante, como as enérgicas “Just Like Me” e “Kicks” e a dramática “Undecided Man”. Outras, como “Ups And Downs” e “There’s Always Tomorrow”, antecipam uma violência que só teria seu posto devidamente garantido no cenário musical depois do nascimento do movimento punk. Não é à toa que “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone” chegou a ser regravada pelo The Sex Pistols.
Apesar da boa repercussão que tinha, com o fim dos anos 60, a banda foi perdendo sua relevância. Por um lado, a sonoridade que garantiu seu sucesso foi ficando cada vez mais datada; por outro, houve uma grande mudança de integrantes do grupo até que eles decidiram acabar a banda em 1976. Isso foi cinco anos depois de eles terem lançado a música que mais vendeu em sua carreira, “Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian)”, uma música de protesto em defesa das populações indígenas dos EUA.
