Ele é mais lembrado por sua poderosa voz e sua técnica de guitarra agressiva em grupos como os Small Faces (1965-1969) e Humble Pie (1969-1975).
Small Faces foi uma das bandas mais populares da Grã-Bretanha nos anos 60, e Marriott compôs, em parceria com Ronnie Lane, a maioria dos sucessos do grupo, incluindo "All Or Nothing", "Itchycoo Park", "Lazy Sunday" e "Tin Soldier". Ele largou a banda abruptamente em 1969, frustrado pela incapacidade do grupo de se livrar de sua imagem de pop adolescente, além do fracasso de conseguir espaço no lucrativo mercado americano.
Logo depois de deixar os Small Faces ele formou uma nova banda, Humble Pie, com o guitarrista Peter Frampton (ex-The Herd), o baterista Jerry Shirley e o baixista Greg Ridley (ex-Spooky Tooth). Depois de vários ensaios na casa de Marriott, em Essex, eles lançaram seu primeiro disco, As Safe As Yesterday Is pelo selo Immediate, alcançando o Top 5 nos EUA com "Natural Born Bugie". O Humble Pie quase desbandou depois de sua primeira turnê americana - depois de voltar à Inglaterra, eles descobriram que a Immediate entrara em processo de falência.
Marriott também teve uma carreira solo depois do fim do Humble Pie, aparecendo nas gravações do cantor francês Johnny Halliday e nas do guitarrista Johnny Thunders, da banda New York Dolls, e também compondo e gravando com o baterista australiano John Lee (ex-The Dingoes).
Marriott morreu tragicamente em um incêndio em sua casa no dia 20 de abril de 1991; ele caiu no sono enquanto fumava, depois de ter chegado de uma viagem transatlântica.
