A sua voz foi comparada a de Ray Charles. Embora ainda adolescente e aprendiz fez parte do Birmingham ritmo e blues um grupo que tocava free lancer com nomes como Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, Howlin ‘Wolf, BB King, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Eddie Boyd, Otis SPANN, Chuck Berry e Bo Diddley em suas turnês pelo Reino Unido era costume nessa época cantores americanos viajar sozinho e ser apoiada por «pick-up ‘bandas. Na idade de 15 anos Winwood tornou um membro do Spencer Davis Group , com o seu irmão mais velho “Muff” (que mais tarde teve muito sucesso como produtor musical).
Durante este tempo, Winwood uniu forças com o guitarrista Eric Clapton, como parte do grupo off-Eric Clapton’s Powerhouse. Canções foram gravadas para a etiqueta Elektra, mas apenas três faixas foram liberadas para o álbum, What’s Shakin ‘.
Durante o final dos anos 1960, Winwood e Mason se tornaram amigos próximos de Jimi Hendrix. Em 1969, Winwood, mais uma vez, deu um forte desempenho no órgão Joe Cocker’s With a Little Help from My Friends, que foi originalmente escrito por John Lennon e Paul McCartney para The Beatles “Sgt. Pepper álbum, e mais tarde tocou teclados em álbuns tão diversas como Toots & the Maytals “Reggae Got Soul e Howlin ‘Wolf’s The London Howlin’ Wolf Sessions.
Em 1998 tocou com a Banda The Lousiania Gator Boys formada especialmente para o filme The Blues Brothers 2000 juntamente com grandes nomes do R&B.
Atualmente se apresenta com a sua própria banda – José Neto (guitarra), Richard Bailey (bateria), Paul Booth (sax, flauta e órgão), Karl van den Bosch (percussão) Em Maio de 2008, Steve fez uma aparição no “Late Night com David Letterman”.Em 2008, Winwood foi classificado o nº 33 em Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Cantores de todos os tempos.
