The Marmalade - Collection.

The Marmalade é uma banda de pop rock escocesa, que se formou originalmente ao extremo leste da cidade de Glasgow, no início dos anos 60 com o nome de “The Gaylords”, tocando nos clubes e bares locais. Pouco tempo depois começaram a ocorrer alterações nos membros do grupo com as idas e vindas de novos integrantes e algum tempo depois o grupo passaria a ser conhecido como “Dean Ford and The Gaylords”. 

Por volta de 1964, o grupo conseguiu assinar um contrato com a gravadora Columbia (EMI) e gravaram quatro singles, mas não conseguiram nenhuma grande repercussão. O grupo permanecia conhecido apenas na Escócia e assim resolveram tentar a sorte no Reino Unido. 

Mas, antes disso em 1965 fizeram uma grande turnê pela Alemanha e depois partiram para Londres, onde começaram a tocar em clubes famosos e a conselho do seu empresário decidiram mudar completamente a imagem da banda, a forma de tocar e em 1966 passaram a assumir o nome de The Marmalade. Passaram também a utilizar o selo CBS e gravaram algumas músicas e conseguindo algum sucesso com “I See the Rain” que chegou a ser elogiada por Jimi Hendrix. 

Durante essa época mudaram-se para Londres e tocaram servindo de apoio para outras bandas mais famosas como Pink Floyd e The Action, e assim foram construindo o nome do conjunto, incluindo turnês com os The Who, Joe Cocker, Traffic, Gene Pitney e The Tremeloes. 

Apesar de conseguirem um certo nome, The Marmalade ainda precisava de um bom sucesso comercial o que deixava bastante preocupada a gravadora CBS, até que conseguiram gravar um cover de The Beatles, a canção "Ob-La Di, Ob-la-Da", que vendeu milhares de cópias no Reino Unido, fazendo o conjunto aparecer frequentemente na BBC. 

Por essa época mudaram para Decca Records, que permitiam a eles escrever e produzir suas próprias músicas e assim gravaram, entre outras músicas, “Reflection of My Life” que se tornou um hit no mundo inteiro, chegando aos 10 melhores na Europa e Estados Unidos e em grande parte da América do Sul. 

A música abriu o caminho para outros sucessos como “Rainbow” e “My Little One”. Em 1971 Ford deixou a banda para fazer carreira solo e com isso começaram novamente várias mudanças, que culminou na perda do baterista Alan Whitehead. Novos integrantes foram recrutados para The Marmelade e assim continuaram a prosseguir fazendo outros sucessos. 

Apesar das diversas mudanças, The Marmalade sobreviveu ao tempo. Graham Knight é o único integrante do grupo original e juntamente com Sandy Newman, Alan Holmes e Damon Sawyer, a mais recente formação, apresentam-se nos dias de hoje com suas performances altamente energéticas e divertidas. 

Desde os anos 60, eles continuam a manter suas raízes escocesas e tem se mostrado transcender a todos os tipos de músicas e gerações. Muitos autores costumam dizer que The Marmalade estão para a Escócia, assim como The Beatles estão para a Inglaterra, por isso e por outras, vale a pena sempre ser lembrada.
