A amizade de ambos permaneceu forte e tendo por assunto comum o desejo de formar uma banda. Uma vez reformado, Alexander e Terry formaram em Los Angeles o grupo.
The Association, que teve algumas modificações em sua formação, estreou com o lançamento Along Comes Mary (1966), música sabotada pelas rádios por representar uma apologia à maconha. O grupo nunca desmentiu ou confirmou a relação com a droga, mas com um ritmo tipicamente caribenho, a canção chegou ao topo das paradas.
No mesmo LP, a canção Cherish, escrita por Kirkman, projeta o The Association mais uma vez como uma das mais tocadas das rádios nos EUA. Em 1967, Alexander deixa a banda para dedicar-se à meditação transcendental na Índia e é substituído por uma novidade que levava às origens de tudo.
O vocalista havaiano Larry Ramos, nascido Hilario Ramos, em Waimea, assume os vocais e o grupo lança seu maior e inesquecível sucesso Never my Love, um hit que chegou ao top five da Bilboard em uma semana.
No mesmo lançamento, Windy coloca The Association junto com os Beatles como única banda a emplacar duas canções no top ten! Ainda no verão de 1967, é convidada a abrir o primeiro festival de música da era dourada do rock, o Monterey Pop, precursor de todos os festivais que a ele seguiram.
The Association possui um grande acervo de canções com arranjos incrivelmente arrojados, como Everything That Touches You, Enter the Young e a magistral Six Men Band, uma autobiografia da formação.
Minha dica fica para a coletânea Greatest Hits, lançada pela Warner, em 1968, garantindo dois lados da magia polifônica desta banda pouco reconhecida, mas de extrema qualidade musical. Site Oficial.
