Herbie Hancock - Discografia.

Herbert Jeffrey Hancock nasceu a 12 de abril de 1940 e começou a tocar piano com sete anos; logo se tornou um prodígio, ao solar o primeiro movimento do concerto de piano de Mozart com a Sinfônica de Chicago aos 11 anos. Depois de estudar na Faculdade de Grinnell, Hancock foi convidado por Donald Byrd em 1961 para integrar o seu grupo em New York; logo em seguida a Blue Note lhe ofereceu um contrato para gravar o seu primeiro álbum "Takin Off". 

Em maio de 1963, Miles Davis o convidou para participar de seu quinteto e por lá ficou durante cinco anos, tempo esse em que absorveu as influências do mestre, deixando o piano acústico e aderindo ao piano elétrico Rhodes. Ao mesmo tempo, sua carreira solo continuava na Blue Note, criando composições sofisticadas para os álbuns "Maiden Voyage", "Cantaloupe Island", "Goodbye to Childhood" e o primoroso "Speak like Child". Ele também gravou em muitas sessões produzidas por Creed Taylor e elaborou sua primeira trilha sonora para o filme "Blow Up" de Antonioni. 

Tendo deixado a banda de Davis em 1968, Hancock gravou o álbum funk, "Fat Albert Rotunda" e em 1969 formou o sexteto Headhanters, grupo de jazz rock que utilizava desde o sintetizador de Patrick Gleeson até os seus Echoplexed, piano elétrico e clavinet, instrumentos que tornaram as gravações mais espaciais e ritmicamente mais complexas, criando um espaço bem personalizado na vanguarda musical. 

No grupo, todos os nomes dos músicos foram vertidos do inglês para o africano (Herbie era Mwandishi). Em 1973 Hancock se separou da banda e passou a estudar o budismo, tendo como meta final tornar as plateias mais felizes. 

Hancock gravou vários álbuns eletrônicos com qualidade superior nos anos setenta, mas se recusou a abandonar o jazz acústico. Depois de uma reunião, os ex-integrantes do Miles Davis Quintet (Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, com Freddie Hubbard no lugar de Miles) se apresentaram em 1976 no Newport Jazz Festival de New York. 

No ano seguinte eles excursionaram com o nome de V.S.O.P. O grupo continuou se apresentando esporadicamente até 1992 e depois da morte de Williams em 1997 não existe mais nenhuma possibilidade de um novo retorno. 

Hancock continuou seu estilo camaleônico nos anos oitenta: lançou na MTV em 1983 um single "Rockit" (acompanhado por um vídeo notável); lançou em 1986 ao vivo o álbum "Jazz Africa" com o virtuoso músico gambiano Foday Musa Suso; montou diversas trilhas sonoras, entre elas a de "Round Midnight" com a qual ganhou o Oscar; e tocou em festivais e excursões com os irmãos Marsalis, George Benson, Michael Brecker e muitos outros. Depois do álbum tecno pop de 1988, "Perfect Machine", Hancock deixou a Columbia e assinou um contrato com a Qwest onde fez somente "A Tribute to Miles" em 1992. E finalmente, assinou com a PolyGram em 1994 para gravar jazz pela Verve e álbuns pop pela Mercury. A curiosidade, versatilidade, e capacidade de Hancock continua crescente, sem nenhum sinal de fraqueza, como atesta o Grammy conquistado em 1998.
