O grupo nasceu em 1969 e somente em fevereiro de 1972 emplacou o hit "The Witch Queen of New Orleans", ficando no 21º posto da parada americana e no 2º lugar da parada britânica. A música surpreendeu quem não estava acostumado: andamento tribal, vocais guturais e guitarras carregadas de efeitos, tudo muito diferente de que o público estava acostumado a ouvir e que frequentava as paradas de sucesso na época. No Brasil, a música foi também um grande sucesso e chegou até ser lançada em compacto.
O grupo mantinha a tradição no palco, chegando a ensaiar danças e passos indígenas. Mas, o Redbone tinha baladas também como essa do vídeo "Come and Get Your Love", de abril de 1974, e, com isso, o grupo foi ainda mais longe: o single vendeu mais de um milhão de cópias. "Come and Get Your Love" mostrou-se mais comercial do que "The Witch Queen...", revelando a banda num estilo mais soul music.
