Art Blakey - Collection.

Nascido dia 11 de outubro de 1919 na cidade de Pittsburgh, na Pensilvânia (EUA), Art Blakey atuou como baterista de jazz desde o final da década de 1930 até meados dos anos 90. Músico enérgico, foi ao lado de Kenny Clarke e Max Roach, um dos inventores do ritmo "bebop" na bateria.

Filho adotivo de homem religioso, foi na Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia onde teve seu primeiro contato com a música. Porém, antes de se tornar um dos mais memoráveis bateristas da história, tocava piano até ser trocado pelo exímio pianista Erroll Garner. Na juventude, chegou inclusive a trabalhar para o lendário baterista Chick Webb, que lhe proporcionou grande aprendizado.

Em 1937, em sua cidade natal, formou sua própria banda com a pianista Mary Lou Williams. Em seguida começou uma turnê com Fletcher Henderson, que durou três anos, e ainda tocou em shows de artistas como Charlie Parker e Sarah Vaughan. Depois, em 1948, em visita à África, aprendeu tocar a bateria polirrítmica e se converteu ao Islamismo, adotando o nome Abdullah Ibn Buhaina.

Gravou um concerto ao vivo na casa de show Birdland em 1954, além das incessantes turnês ao longo dos anos, com suas bandas “Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers”, e na “Art Blakey & The Afro-drum Ensemble”, até falecer cinco dias após completar 71 anos, em 16 de outubro de 1990.
