Todos veteranos egressos de grupos escoceses de soul e jazz. A carreira da AWB se iniciou em 1973 quando a banda tocou na abertura do show de Eric Clapton no Rainbow Theatre. Em seguida a AWB lançou seu LP de estreia, Show Your Hand, que não obteve sucesso. No ano seguinte alcançou o primeiro lugar da parada norte-americana com a música instrumental "Pick Up the Pieces." O sucesso estrondoso do LP foi ofuscado pela morte do baterista Robbie McIntosh, no dia 23 de setembro de 1974 em função de uma overdose de heroína.
O baterista Steve Ferrone, ex-Bloodstone, substituiu McIntosh no terceiro álbum da banda, Cut the Cake, lançado em 1975, que teve três músicas que alcançaram o top ten das paradas musicais norte-americanas: "Cut the cake", "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" e "School Boy Crush." Em 1976 a AWB lançou o LP Soul Searching, no qual a canção "Queen of My Soul" alcançou o TOP 40 americano.
O álbum posterior foi Benny & Us, uma colaboração com o legendário Ben E. King. Em 1978 a AWB lançou Warmer Communications, em 1979 Feel No Fret, e em 1980 Shine, que não conseguiram recapturar a energia da AWB do início de carreira. A banda se dissolveu em 1982. Ferrone juntou-se ao Duran Duran e Stuart passou a gravar com Paul McCartney. Gorrie, Ball, e McIntyre se juntaram e refizeram a Average White Band em 1989, com Alex Ligertwood nos vocais.
