Alex já vinha trilhando a tortuosa estrada do Rock & Roll desde 1958, quando formou a original Alex Harvey Band, que se trasmutou em Alex Harvey And The New Saints e, finalmente, em Alex Harvey Soul Band. No fim dos anos 60, o cara tentou se reinventar nos palcos, fazendo parte da banda que dava suporte à primeira encenação de Hair, em Londres. Tá pra aparecer na história do rock um sujeito que tenha se mantido fiel ao seu credo por 14 anos e foi chegar ao Top 10 apenas aos 40 anos de idade (com Delilah, em 1975). De 1958-1965, ele era o líder da banda Alex Harvey Big Soul, tocando blues e canções de rock and roll. Depois de sair da banda Big Soul, ele tentou brevemente uma carreira solo, mas com pouco sucesso.
Alex Harvey encontrou um amigo que o chamou para irem assistir ao Tear Gas, uma banda local que fazia um som muito doido e anárquico, misturando Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Captain Beefheart e Jimi Hendrix a performances absolutamente teatrais. Em poucos dias Alex se uniu ao Tear Gas e formaram a Sensational Alex Harvey Band, gravando em seguida o álbum Framed. O primeiro disco da Sensational Alex Harvey Band é fenomenal, onde se destacam canções poderosas como “Midnight Moses”, “Isobel Goudie”, “Framed”, e entre outras, uma surprendente cover de “I Just Want To Make Love To You”, de Muddy Waters. Alex Harvey se reinventou e o som da SAHB é uma mistura de hard blues com glam rock. Sua voz forte e marcante se encaixava perfeitamente nos arranjos bem elaborados da banda, e finalmente, aos 37 anos, Alex Harvey experimenta um pouco de sucesso. A banda, formada por Alex Harvey (guitarra e vocal); Zal Cleminson (guitarra e vocal); Chris Glen (baixo); Ted McKenna (bateria) e Hugh McKenna (teclados), entra em um ritmo frenético de turnês, onde se consolidam como uma grande banda de palco, com Alex chamando a atenção como um dos mais performáticos e provocadores frontman do rock.
Em 4 de fevereiro de 1982, depois de realizar seu último show com sua nova banda, o Cowboys Electric, Harvey sofreu um ataque cardíaco fulminante. Em uma ambulância a caminho do hospital, ele sofreu um segundo ataque cardíaco, este fatal. Sua morte aconteceu um dia antes de seu aniversário de 47 anos, em Zeebrugge, na Bélgica.
