A formação atual é composta pelo fundador da banda Greg Spawton (baixo, guitarra e teclado), juntamente com Nick D'Virgilio (bateria, guitarra e teclado), David Longdon (vocais, flauta, teclados, guitarras e baixo) e Rikard Sjöblom (guitarras e teclados). Robin Armstrong (guitarras e teclados) se juntou ao grupo para apresentações ao vivo em 2019.
Até 2009, a banda atuou como um projeto predominantemente de estúdio liderado por Spawton e o co - fundador Andy Poole (guitarras, baixo e teclados), que saiu da banda em 2018, com a mudança de line-ups e músicos convidados.
Depois de começar como uma banda independente, Big Big Train assinou contrato com a Giant Electric Pea de 1993 até 1998 e distribuiu seus lançamentos através de seu próprio site.
Desde seu sexto álbum The Underfall Yard, que recebeu aclamação da crítica da comunidade do rock progressivo, uma formação mais estável foi estabelecida, e a banda realizou seus primeiros shows ao vivo, Kings Place, Londres, em Agosto de 2015.
Os shows foram eleitos os eventos do ano pelos leitores da revista Prog. Stone & Steel, um Blu-ray com os ensaios de 2014 no Real World Studios e quatro das canções apresentadas no Kings Place, foram lançadas em 21 de março de 2016.
Foram os vencedores do Breakthrough Award no Progressive Music Awards realizado em Kew Gardens, Londres em 3 de setembro de 2013, e foram nomeados em várias outras categorias nos últimos anos.
O último álbum de estúdio da banda, Grand Tour, foi lançado em maio de 2019.
Big Big Train embarcou em sua primeira turnê no Reino Unido em outubro de 2019 e uma nova turnê pela Europa em 2020.
